After 4 days of meetings and screenings Parma International Music Film Festival is finally ready to crown its own protagonists.

Saturday night, at the end of the exclusive diner gala hosted by the Circolo della Lettura in the refined Salone San Paolo, the precious awards Violetta D’Oro for the best soundtrack and the Violetta D’Argento for the best movie will be consigned to their new proud owners.

The whole Parma International Music Film Festival would like to thank all artists and audience occured to the festival during this fabulous week.

[ITA] Produzione che potremmo definire assolutamente particolare dal punto di vista del mix tra suono e immagini, come tutte le produzioni della Baraka Films dedicate ai “rock climbers” cioè agli scalatori, alpinisti, arrampicatori.  Rockin’ Cuba è un viaggio attraverso la musica e il rock climbing, le immagini ci fanno seguire l’esplorazione della Valle di Vinales che si trova nella parte più occidentale dell’isola di Cuba, inserita dal 1999 nell’elenco dei “Patrimoni dell’umanità” dell’Unesco.

[ENG] A production that could be called absolutely particular from the point of view of the mix of sound and images, like all the productions of Baraka Films dedicated to “rock climbers: climbers, mountaineers, cliffhangers. Rockin’ Cuba is a journey through the music and rock climbing, the pictures make us follow the exploration of the Vinales Valley which is located in the westernmost part of the island of Cuba, since 1999 included in the list of “World Heritage of’ humanity” by UNESCO.

[ITA] Un piccolo musical che riguarda la voglia di evasione dalla vita di tutti i giorni, a volte piena di frustrazioni specialmente quelle relative al lavoro. Il musical è ispirato dalla composizione teatrale di Mike Pettry’s “Without A Stitch On” e riguarda una ragazza così stufa della vita che sta conducendo che decide di fare una scelta: restare nuda, tutto il tempo. Naked ha vinto come “Best Original song” al Long Island International Film Expo e in nominations in altri importanti festival internazionali.

[ENG] A small musical that concerns the desire to escape from everyday life, sometimes full of frustrations, especially those related to work. The musical is inspired by the theatrical composition by Mike Pettry’s “Without A Stitch On” and is about a girl so sick of life she’s leading who decides to make a choice: stay naked all the time. Naked won “Best Original Song” at the Long Island International Film Expo and nominations in other major international festivals.

[ITA] Un documentario – in versione inglese dal titolo “The Desert Treasure” – che racconta la storia e le tradizioni dei beduini del Qatar, ed è l’unione della nobile gente nomade alle piante sulle quali possono contare. Il girato dei luoghi, la fotografia e il mix con la musica, fanno di questo documentario naturalistico una perla nel suo genere.

[ENG] A documentary which tells about history and traditions of the Bedouins of Qatar, and about the bond between the noble nomadic people to the plants on which they can rely on. The shot of the locations, photography and mix with the music, make of this naturalistic documentary a gem of its kind.

[ITA] Il dr. Davide Piso, coraggioso scienziato, studia da anni migliaia di casi di persone rapite dagli alieni, ricavando una sconvolgente tesi: alcune razze extraterrestri da millenni si insediano nella mente degli umani rapiti per manipolarli geneticamente e per sfruttarne un’energia che viene definita “anima”.  Nella convinzione di poter espellere i parassiti alieni, il professore, con l’aiuto della sua equipe, utilizza una temeraria tecnica ipnotica attraverso la quale gli “addotti” rivivono l’esperienza del loro rapimento, ma rivelano anche di ospitare altre personalità… Basato su rivoluzionarie teorie scientifiche che abbattono i confini dei nostri credo, il film lancia la denominazione per una nuova onda cinematografica: “Realscienza”.

[ENG] Dr. David Piso, courageous scientist, has been studying for years thousands of cases of people abducted by aliens, deriving a shocking thesis: some extraterrestrial races for thousands of years settled in the minds of human abductees to genetically manipulate and exploit energy that is called “soul” . In the belief that they can expel the alien parasites, the professor, with the help of his team, uses a reckless hypnotic technique through which the “abductees” relive the experience of their abduction, but they also reveal to hot other personalities. [ITA] Film drammatico che narra di un attore napoletano, Michelangelo, rassegnato al nuovo e all’incomprensibile che avanza nei teatri. Appesa al chiodo la maschera di Pulcinella Michelangelo parte alla volta di Parigi per recuperare il rapporto col figlio. Nelle banlieues parigine, Michelangelo ritrova suo figlio e scopre un vecchio teatro custodito da Marie, un’attrice milanese che si inventa parigina. Con l’aiuto di un professore della Sorbona, della sua assistente Faiza e dei ragazzi del quartiere, l’attore napoletano (ri)spolvererà poltrone e tavole del palcoscenico, mettendo in scena “l’ultimo pulcinella”, simbolo degli umili e anima del popolo partenopeo e di tutti i popoli offesi. Non sono molti in Italia gli attori di teatro portatori sani del gesto e del corpo intesi come propulsori di ritmo e come elementi centrali dello spazio magico della scena. Massimo Ranieri è uno di quegli artisti, erede della centralità dell’attore interprete e del copione pretesto per la sua performance.

[ENG] A dramatic film that tells of a Neapolitan actor, Michelangelo, resigned to the new and incomprehensible era that advances in theaters. Giving up with his Pulcinella mask Michelangelo leaves for Paris to recover the relationship with his son. In the Parisian banlieues, Michelangelo finds his son and discovers an old theater guarded by Marie, an actress from Milan who pretends to be from Paris. With the help of a professor of the Sorbonne, his assistant Faiza and boys of the neighborhood, the Neapolitan actor (re)dust off chairs and tables of the stage, staging “the last Pulcinella”, a symbol of the humble and soul of the people of Naples and of all peoples offended. There are not many Italian actors able to carry gesture and body understood as engines of rhythm and as central elements of the magical space of the scene. Massimo Ranieri is one of those artists, heir to the centrality of the actor and the script as excuse for his performance.

[ITA] L’arte è morta. La “Musa” è morta e gli artisti di ogni epoca per rendere omaggio prendono parte al suo funerale, ma qualcuno non si presenterà… Sia il corto, in animazione, sia la musica viaggiano nella stessa direzione ma su due veicoli diversi. Entrambi hanno come filo conduttore l’omaggio all’arte che è morta, come per le immagini anche i riferimenti musicali sono chiari ed espliciti, come la prima citazione del “Lacrimosa” di Mozart , la musica arreda il momento come fosse un salotto degli artisti del “gruppo dei sei” e l’idea di un Satiè che suona “musique d’ameublement” o “musique da tapisserie”.

[ENG] Art is dead. The “Muse” is dead, and artists of all ages take part in a tribute to his funeral, but someone does not show up … Both the short, animation, music are traveling in the same direction but on two different vehicles. Quando però, attraverso la testimonianza di un suo conoscente, scopre come il suo stesso fratello è morto di overdose nonostante le sue ammonizioni…decide di gettarsi da un ponte a sua volta ma interviene una ragazza a salvarlo convincendolo con gli stessi suoi discorsi…

[ENG] Frankie calls himself a “life saver”. And in fact he’s dominated by an instinct that leads him selflessly to save lives. But when, through the testimony of  acquaintance of his own, he discovers that his own brother died of a drug overdose despite his admonitions, he decides to throw himself off a bridge, but a girl intervenes to save him convincing him with his own speeches …

[ITA] L’ostinazione, l’eccesso, il patimento nella vita e nelle opere dell’esploratore cineasta e fotografo Alberto Maria De Agostani (1883 – 1960) arbitrariamente reinventate. Partito come missionario a 26 anni da un paesino del Piemonte, raggiunse nel 1910 la Patagonia e la Terra del Fuoco. Scalò montagne e scoprì Fiordi ed esplorò ghiacciai dando loro i nomi. Di fronte allo struggimento e al dolore della scomparsa degli ultimi indios non seppe usare altre parole che quelle impressionate sulle sue lastre fotografiche o sui fotogrammi del suo bellissimo film “Terre Magellaniche”.

[ENG] The stubbornness, the excess, the suffering in life and works of the explorer and filmmaker, photographer Alberto Maria De Agostini (1883 – 1960) are arbitrarily reinvented in this movie. Left as a missionary as a 26 years guy from a small town in Piedmont, he reached in 1910 Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. He climbed mountains and fjords, he discovered and explored glaciers giving them names. Faceing the yearning and pain of the death of the last Indians he could not use other words than those impressed on his photographic plates or on the frames of his beautiful film “Terre Magellaniche”.

Si può far l’amore vestiti?

[ITA] E’ la storia di Aurora (Bianca Guaccero), trentenne solare e ottimista, che fugge dal suo paesino in Puglia per trasferirsi a Roma e specializzarsi in sessuologia. Costretta a tornare a casa, poiché crede che la madre sia in fin di vita, si trova a fare i conti con la curiosità e la diffidenza dei paesani. Chi può essere così audace da aprire uno studio di terapie sessuali in un posto pieno di pregiudizi dove tutti sanno tutto? Commedia divertente e con una singolare sceneggiatura, curata in particolar modo l’autenticità dei luoghi e dei personaggi che rispecchiano uno spaccato della realtà del Sud assai fedele, nei comportamenti e nella mentalità.

[ENG] It’s the story of Aurora (Bianca Guaccero), thirty years old, cheerful and optimistic, who escapes from his village in Puglia in order to move to Rome and specialize in sexology. Forced to return home because she believes that his mother is dying, she finds herself to deal with the curiosity and suspicionof the villagers. Who can be so bold to open a sex therapy studio in a place full of prejudice where everyone knows everything? A really funny comedy with a unique script, especially curated in the authenticity of places and characters that reflect an insight of southern Italy  faithful in behavior and mentality.

[ITA] F5 è un musical fatto di otto piccole novelle. Otto perché ci sono otto band musicali che prendono parte al film ed ogni novella è dedicata ad una di loro. Il film è un mix tra documentario e fiction, caratterizzato da ogni piccola storia che viene rappresentata sia nella dimensione reale e sia nel mondo dell’illusione e dei sogni.

[ENG] F5 is a musical composed by eight little novels. Eight is because of the eight musical bands involved in the movie and any novel is dedicated to each one of them. The movie is a mix between a documentary and a fiction, characterized by every single story representing in both real dimension and illusionary and slumberland.

[ITA] Dopo un controllo della polizia alla fermata dell’autobus, un giovane padre di origini arabe non sa come spiegare al figlio il motivo di tale trattamento. Ignaro che gli eventi più imprevedibili della giornata dovranno ancora avvenire…

[ENG] Right after a police check at the bus stop, a young arab-born father can’t explain to his son the reason of that kind of treatment, unaware that the most unpredictable events of the day didn’t happen yet.

[ITA] Nova Springs, una cittadina verde e ricca di giovani talenti del rock in ascesa, è colpita al cuore da una serie di brutali omicidi che sembrano interessare il mondo della musica, ad opera di un misterioso serial killer mascherato Naughty Rocky Boy che uccide le sue vittime con citazioni rock servendosi di strumenti modificati ad arte. I fumettosi personaggi che popolano il film, sono sempre tutti molto “sopra le righe”, quanto lo è il mondo del rock che ha fatto della provocazione e della follia i suoi punti di forza.

[ENG] Nova Springs, a green town full of young rock talents, is struck to the heart by a series of brutal murders that seem to affect the world of music, work of a mysterious disguised serial killer called Naughty Rocky Boy, who kills his victims with rock music citations using tools artfully modified. The comic-like characters that populate the film are all very “over the top”, as the world of rock actually is, a world that made of provocation and insanity its strengths.

Petzl Roc Trip China

[ITA] Nel novembre del 2011 più di 600 scalatori si uniscono al team per affrontare il Petzl RocTrip, tutti i partecipanti si sono cimentati sulla roccia alla scoperta di nuove vie (più di 250). Per molti mesi il team di Baraka Films ha preparato con minuziosa cura il progetto e girato interviste in tutte le lingue, una creazione musicale esclusiva e molte sequenze estreme. Si parte dalle province di Guizhou a Sud-Ovest della Cina e più precisamente ai piedi delle falesie e del Grande Arco di Gétù Hé. Un viaggio intenso alla scoperta di un paese misterioso e dei suoi abitanti, in compagnia di molti scalatori internazionali.

[ENG] On November 2011, more than 600 climbers join the team to deal with the Petzl RocTrip, all participants have ventured on the rock to the discovery of new ways (more than 250). Con la sola guida di un vecchio falco, egli si trova a dover scegliere cosa è veramente reale e cosa deriva semplicemente dalla fantasia. Ma i veri valori rimangono comunque tali.

[ENG] When a boy is removed from the civilized world, HE discovers another world, a shadowy and mysterious land populated by old gods and wild hunters. With THE only guidance of an old hawk, he has to choose what is truly real and what simply comes from the imagination. But the true values ​​remain such the same.

[ITA] Cosa succede quando una donna fonda e dirige un’orchestra? Ecco l’attività e il metodo di Johanna Knauf, una delle rare donne-direttrici, che fonde musica, sensibilità e socializzazione. Ci si chiede come faccia a far cantare centinaia di dilettanti che assieme a professionisti eseguono grandi opere nei luoghi più belli della città di Firenze. Un’etnografa, infiltrata nel coro, rovescia la performance ‘concerto’ filmando la direttrice dal punto di vista degli esecutori…  Film vincitore del premio “The Spirit of Da Vinci Award 2013” al Da Vinci Days Film Festival – USA.

[ENG] What happens when a woman raises and runs an orchestra? Here’s the activity and the method of Johanna Knauf, one of the rare female conductor, who melts music, sensibility and socialization. It is incredible how she could let hundreds of amateurs, along with professionals, perform great operas at the best locations around the city of Florence. An undercover etnographer just turns upside down the performance, filming the conductor from the point of view of the executors… Winner of “The Spirit of Da Vinci Award 2013” at the Da Vinci Days Film Festival – USA.

Director: Loki Ojha (Alok) – Composer: Loki Alok – Production: independent

[ITA] Cortometraggio di genere horror, thriller, animazione, dance music, video sperimentale. Il personaggio principale viene ucciso dal suo migliore amico e dalla moglie per i loro problemi di business, ma l’anima del protagonista si vendica tormentando i due assassini. La particolarità di questo cortometraggio è che è stato completamente realizzato con un PC e un Nokia 5230.

[ENG] Short movie close to horror, thriller, animation, dance music, experimental video. The main character gets killed by his best friend and wife for business matters, but the spirit of the protagonist takes his revenge tormenting the two killers. The peculiarity of this short is about the fact it has been entirely produced with a PC and a mobile Nokia 5230.

[ITA] Cortometraggio senza parole che si basa su quattro bambini di religioni differenti che corrono dietro un aquilone, ognuno per diversa strada e alla fine si incontreranno….Anshul Sinha è un film maker che ha già ricevuto premi internazionali e questo cortometraggio è stato girato con la camera del suo cellulare.

[ENG] Silent short based on four kids of different creeds chasing a kite. Each child is running along a separate road that will lead him to gather with the others in the end… Anshul Sinha is an international awarded film maker and this latest work is completely shot with a mobile phone camera.

Opera Stories: Carmen

Director: Nicolas Crapanne – Production: Gedeon Programmes

[ITA] Grandi nomi del mondo della lirica del 20simo secolo che entreranno a far parte delle leggenda, hanno condiviso questo progetto, cioè una serie di quattro tra i maggiori lavori operistici tra i quali “Carmen” di Bizet con il mezzosoprano Beatrice Uria-Monzon considerata un vero e proprio esempio nel ruolo di Carmen. Una rara e privilegiata opportunità per lo spettatore di guardare cosa accade dietro le quinte e tutto il lavoro che c’è dietro una produzione d’opera: bozzetti, costumi, scenografie, direttori di palcoscenico.

[ENG] Future legends of the 20^th century operatic world shared this project, namely a series of four among the main opera works like Bizet’s “Carmen” featuring the mezzo-soprano Beatrice Uria Monzon, considered as a real example in the role of Carmen. A rare and favored chance for the audience to behold what happens behind the curtains of the preparation before an opera production: sketches, costumes, scenic design, stage directors.

[ENG] Paris, 5.000 years of history, an exclusive travel across the time. [ITA] Prima di Sergio Leone tutti avevano pensato che il western potesse essere solo un genere americano, finché arrivò dal mercato italiano “Per un pugno di dollari” che oltre a batter il record degli incassi lanciava un attore che poi avrebbe fatto una splendida carriera: Clint Eastwood. Massimiliano Pietrantonio, studente di Popular Music al Conservatorio “A. Boito” di Parma, decide di presentare un excursus di questo genere filmico legato alla musica di Morricone come ricerca per un esame di composizione e ne fa un documento che è una spaccato della nostra storia del cinema attraverso un genere che è riuscito a mettere K.O. gli stessi che lo hanno inventato.

Massimiliano Pierantonio, Popular Music student at the Conservatory “A. Boito” in Parma, decides to show an excursus about this filmic genre deeply bonded to the Morricone music, and make it a document which speaks about an all-italian genre that drove to K.O. those who actually invented it.

Un’intervista a Eddy Lovaglio, ideatrice e organizzatrice del “Parma International Music Film Festival”, manifestazione dedicata al rapporto tra cinema e musica, la cui prima edizione si svolgerà dal 23 al 28 settembre 2013.

Da cosa nasce l’idea del Festival?

L’idea è nata lo scorso anno, in previsione delle celebrazioni del bicentenario Verdiano. Ci siamo chiesti “se Verdi fosse stato un compositore della nostra epoca attuale… che tipo di compositore sarebbe stato?” , forse un compositore di musica da film. Perché in effetti i grandi compositori di oggi compongono colonne sonore, a cominciare dai Morricone o Nino Rota fino a volare oltreoceano con James Horner (vincitore di due premi Oscar tra cui Titanic) o John Williams che ha lavorato con Spielberg ed è vincitore di cinque premi Oscar. Ma fino ad ora nessun festival ha mai attribuito, almeno in Europa, il primo premio alla colonna sonora. Così è nata l’idea e l’abbiamo legata a Giuseppe Verdi visto che siamo nell’anno delle sue celebrazioni e in territorio Verdiano. Il Grand Prix sarà infatti la “Violetta d’Oro” che oltre ad essere il simbolo di Parma (il fiore di Maria Luigia d’Austria) è anche l’eroina Verdiana per eccellenza.

Quali sono gli obiettivi che vi siete prefissati per questa prima edizione a Parma?

Soprattutto portare a Parma produzioni di valore artistico e offrire la possibilità ai compositori di avere il loro giusto riconoscimento. Spesso i film che più portiamo nel cuore hanno come presupposto quello di avere una buona colonna sonora che diventa il leit motiv della nostra vita o dei nostri sogni. L’obiettivo è anche quello di iniziare un festival che dovrà crescere negli anni facendo diventare Parma uno dei poli importanti per il cinema nazionale e internazionale.

La partecipazione è aperta sia a professionisti affermati che a esordienti?

Naturalmente a professionisti affermati del settore, ma abbiamo anche inserito una sezione “giovani” con cortometraggi per dare la possibilità anche a tanti giovani film maker di avere una vetrina che possa mettere in risalto i loro lavori.

Verdi e il cinema, un binomio eccellente. Cosa succederà all’interno di questa sezione del festival? Quali iniziative saranno dedicate alla celebrazione del bicentenario Verdiano?

Nel panorama cinematografico sono state prodotte tante pellicole su Verdi o utilizzando la musica del Maestro. Quindi c’è un’ampia produzione per la quale verrà fatta una selezione da presentare al pubblico, di vecchi film e di pellicole più attuali. La sezione verrà curata dal prof. Michele Guerra, docente di storia e critica del cinema dell’Università degli studi di Parma, il quale terrà anche conferenze in merito a questa tematica.

E’ prevista la partecipazione di ospiti illustri?

Ci aspettiamo sicuramente la partecipazione di ospiti illustri, ciò dipenderà anche dalle produzioni in concorso e il programma dettagliato uscirà fra qualche mese. Ci sarà sicuramente un ospite “illustre” al quale vorremmo attribuire un premio alla carriera, ci saranno ospiti di grande prestigio in giuria, tra i quali posso anticipare la presenza del dr. Roberto Mancinelli della Sony, e poi una personalità di grande prestigio è il nostro direttore artistico, M° Riccardo J. Moretti, compositore di musica da film e allievo di Nino Rota, nonché docente al Conservatorio “A. Boito” di Parma dove ha istituito proprio una sezione di musica per immagini.
